On wuwu in the first month of Zhenming 3, former prefect of Zi Gao Yunqi was appointed commander of the Right Forest-Unicorn Army. On guihai, Zhu Wei, former horse-and-foot commander of Tianping and honorary Grand Guardian, became prefect of Huai. On guiyou, Shi Zhao of the Right Heavenly Martial Army was appointed prefect of Mi. On wuyin, Li Jian, former prefect of Huai, was made prefect of An and granted the name Zhijie. On jimao, Huo Yanwei—deputy commissioner of Xuanyi, acting military commissioner, deputy northern pacification commissioner, specially advanced, and honorary Grand Mentor—was named deputy commissioner of Tianping with charge of military affairs.

On jiashen in the second month the Prince of Jin struck Liyang; Liu Zhen held him off and forced a withdrawal. On yiyou, Dong Zhang, former prefect of Cai, was given acting charge of Xuanyi Army affairs. On dinghai, Liang Jiye, former commander of the Right Forest-Unicorn Army, became senior general of the Left Guard. On renchen, Zhang Shaogui, Rent and Corvée commissioner and honorary Minister of Works, was made Director of the Imperial Banquets while retaining the Rent and Corvée post. On guisi, Yuan Xiang—acting commissioner of Pinglu, Guest Bureau commissioner, and Silver Terrace director—was made honorary Minister of Works. On jiawu, Lou Jiying of the Flying Dragon office was appointed senior general of the Left Martial Guard.

On gengshen in the third month, Guo Shaobin, former Pacify-the-Barbarians commissioner and honorary Minister of Works, became prefect of Xi. On xinyou, Pei Yan, former deputy commissioner of Tianping, was appointed prefect of Sui. On wuyin, eleven Qian kin—prefects and deputies from Hu, Su, Wen, Mu, Bao, Ming, Yi, Feng, Luan, and Zhenhai—received promotions in office, merit rank, and noble title at King of Wu-Yue Qian Liu's request.

On gengchen in the fourth month of summer, Cai Jingsi, former acting senior general of the Left Martial Guard, became senior general of the Right Martial Guard. On xinsi, Liu Qi, former prefect of An, was given acting charge of Jin prefecture and the Jianning Army. Zhang Shi, former prefect of Mi, was appointed prefect of Ying and commissioner of its training regiment. On guiwei, Liu Yankui, Six Armies adjutant and acting commissioner of the Left Heavenly Martial Army, became prefect of Chan. On xinmao, Liu Zan, senior general of the Right Thousand-Ox Guard, was appointed Khitan pacification commissioner. The court ordered that circuit military marshals staffing their headquarters should appoint officials on the same model as the Heavenly Stratagem Grand Marshal's office. On xinchou, Wu E, chief adjutant of Qinghai's original followers and prefect of Long, was made honorary Minister of Works. On guimao, Qian Chuanxiang, vanguard commander of the Two-Zhe headquarters and acting Feng prefect, was appointed prefect of Si.

On gengchen in the sixth month, Lei Jingcong, former Eastern Capital horse-and-foot commander and Left Heavenly Martial commissioner, became Ru prefect and defense commissioner of the prefecture. On xinmao, Zhang Shaogui—Rent and Corvée commissioner, Grand Master of Splendid Happiness, honorary Minister of Works, and acting banquet director—was made Shen prefect. On renchen, Liu Qi, acting commissioner of Jin and the Jianning Army and former An prefect, was made Jianning observation and retention commissioner.

On disi in the seventh month of autumn, Chen Hong, prefect of Zi, was transferred to Di. On yichou, Feng Qiao of the Ministry of Punishments outer section entered the Hanlin Academy. On bingyin, Yang Yanzhi of Ru became Left Guard senior general; Liu Zhongba, former Left Guard senior general, was made restored Cloud-Banner General and senior general of the Right Valiant Cavalry. On gengwu, Zhang Ye—deputy commissioner of the Six Armies and Guards, restored Cloud-Banner General, and honorary Grand Guardian—was appointed Zi prefect. On xinsi in the eighth month, Zhou Wu, commander of the Left Divine Martial Army, became Ning prefect; Liu Renduo, Left Chong'an commander and former Shen prefect, was made Yan prefect. On wuzi, Zhang Wanjin, military commissioner of Taiping, was granted the name Shoujin. On gengshen in the ninth month, Zhang Changsun, remotely holding Chang, was remotely given Shou and made commissioner of its training regiment.

On renwu in the tenth month of winter, Zhang Jun, acting Western Line camp inspector and Right Martial Guard senior general, was given acting charge of Shang. On wuzi the court proclaimed: "Grand Mentor of the Heir Li Zhan has used Buddhism to mislead the people; he is forbidden to wander at will from now on." On guisi, Zhang Sirong, former commissioner of the Chongde Army, became Left Martial Guard senior general. On jihai, Qian Liu of Wu-Yue—already marshal, Huainan and coastal commissioner, four-sided supreme commander, and Minister-President—was named marshal of all armies under Heaven. On renyin, Wu Ai, Left Vice Director of the Secretariat, became Minister of Works and credential commissioner for the Two-Zhe circuits. That month the Prince of Jin left Weizhou for Taiyuan.

On dingmao in the intercalary tenth month, Xu Tang, former Shang prefect, became Left Valiant Cavalry senior general and commissioner of the Western Capital inner-palace walls. On renwu in the eleventh month, Zheng Jue, Secretariat Vice Director and Grand Counselor, was given acting charge of the Ministry of Revenue. On wuzi, Zhou Wu of Ning became Wujing defense commissioner while holding Qing as acting prefect. Dou Tingwan, commissioner of the River-Tong Army, was appointed Ning prefect.

In the twelfth month the Prince of Jin returned from Taiyuan to Weizhou. On gengshen, Hua Wenqi became Right Dragon-Tiger commander; Zhang Yanxun, Right Dragon-Tiger commander, was made Shang prefect; Li Xiang, former Western Capital wall commissioner, became Right Awesome Guard senior general; Li Zhouyi, Left Golden Crow senior general, was made acting Left Street commissioner. On renxu, Zhang Zongshi, Prince of Wei—acting Grand Preceptor, Grand Counselor, Henan prefect, and overseer of the Six Armies and Guards—was named deputy marshal of all armies. On bingyin, Wang Yanzhang, Western Line horse commander, honorary Grand Guardian, and Zheng prefect and defense commissioner, was promoted to honorary Grand Mentor. On dingmao, He Gui—Western Line horse-and-foot commander and Left Dragon-Tiger commander—was made honorary Grand Mentor and Grand Counselor and named Xuanyi military commissioner over Zheng, Hua, and Pu. (《Zizhi Tongjian》: He Gui was promoted because opinion credited him with pacifying Qing.)>〉 On jisi the Emperor went to Luoyang to prepare for a Southern Suburban rite the following year. He then went to Yique and bowed at Xuanling in person. Rent and Corvée commissioner Zhao Yan urged Heaven-sacrifice, saying: "Emperors who receive the Mandate must perform this rite—Your Majesty should see it through." Chancellor Jing Xiang argued: "Since Liu Zhen's defeat the treasury is empty and the people are squeezed dry for the armies; suburban rites mean lavish rewards—a hollow title at real cost. Jin forces press the frontier; the court must not travel lightly." The Emperor refused and went ahead. That month the Jin seized Yangliu; frightened, the Emperor canceled the suburban rite and raced back to the Eastern Capital. (《Zizhi Tongjian》 states: Travelers spread word that Jin troops had entered Daliang and held the Si ford. Courtiers wept for their homes; the Emperor panicked and abandoned the suburban rite.)>〉 On guiyou the court ordered that except for essential escorts, the rest of the civil and military ranks were to be staged by Zhang Gun of the Censorate and dispatched to the Eastern Capital a day or two after the Emperor left. On jiaxu, Zhang Zongshi, deputy marshal, Grand Preceptor, Grand Counselor, Henan prefect, and Prince of Wei, was made Western Capital custodian.

In the first month of Zhenming 4, Jin forces raided Yan and Pu; the Emperor returned from Luoyang. On gengchen, Yao of Cai was given acting charge of the Ganhua observation commission. On yiyou, Huang Gui, former horse-and-foot commander of the Jingnan Army, became Cai prefect. On jiawu, Qi Fengguo, Right Leading Army Guard senior general, became Left Golden Crow senior general and street commissioner.

In the second month General Xie Yanzhang marched tens of thousands against Yangliu. On jiazi the Prince of Jin relieved Yangliu; Yanzhang's force was beaten and fell back. On renwu in the third month, Zhang Jun, former Right Martial Guard senior general, became Left Guard senior general. On guisi, Jiang Kefu, Zhenguo headquarters adjutant and circuit horse-and-foot commander, was appointed Yan prefect. On renyin, Ma Chuo—Qian Liu's campaign chief of staff and Qin commissioner—was promoted to honorary Grand Preceptor and Grand Counselor while keeping his staff post, at Liu's request.

On dingwei in the fourth month of summer, Zhao Gu of the Xuanhui Court became acting Qing commissioner; deputy Wei Jian was given acting charge of the court. On jiyou, Zheng Jue was raised to Purple-Gold Grand Master, kept as Vice Director and Grand Counselor, made concurrent Minister of Punishments and grand academician, and enfeoffed Marquis of Xingyang with five hundred added households. Xiao Xiang, acting Vice Minister of Personnel and Baron of Lanling, was made Grand Counselor and advanced to Earl of Lanling with four hundred added households. On gengxu, Du Cun, former Chongde commissioner and Right Martial Guard senior general, became Right Leading Army Guard senior general. On jiayin, Dou Zhuan, Ministry of Punishments director and History Office compiler, entered the Hanlin Academy. Earlier, Dou Mengzheng had drafted Qian Liu's edict and was banished to Penglai; the Emperor now summoned Zhuan to the Hanlin and sent Li Zhen to ask: "Zhuan is Xiao Xiang's son-in-law—should the Secretariat weigh this?" The Secretariat answered: "Kin of chancellors avoid high clean posts by old rule, yet special favor has recent precedent and need not block the appointment." The Emperor assented. On jiwei, Han Zhu of Lingwu ended mourning restoration and received Grand Preceptor of the Palace Gate while keeping honorary Grand Mentor and Grand Counselor. On guihai, Gao Wanxing of Bohai was also named disposition commissioner for Yan and Yan, retaining his other titles. Wanjin, his brother and Yan commissioner, had just died—that was why. On jisi, Zhao Guangfeng was retired as Minister of Works with five hundred added households after repeated pleas of age. On xinwei the court made Jing Xiang acting overseer of circuit salt and iron. On renshen, Zhao Guangyun, Heir Apparent Mentor, became Vice Minister of Personnel.

On jiaxu in the fifth month, Gao Conghui, Jingnan horse-and-foot commander and honorary Minister of Works, was given acting Hao prefect. On yihai, Zhang Shi, specially advanced and former Ying training commissioner, was made restored Cloud-Banner General while keeping Ying. On gengchen, Kong Zheng, retired Minister of Works, became National University chancellor. On jichou, Wei Can, vice-director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, was made Right Remonstrator.

On jiachen in the sixth month, Zhu Lingde of She, Purple-Gold Grand Master and honorary Minister of Works, was made Zhongwu observation commissioner. On jiyou, Yao, acting Ganhua retention commissioner and honorary Grand Guardian, was confirmed Ganhua observation commissioner. On gengxu the Emperor made Wang Qiao Director of Palace Construction to avoid his father's taboo name Mi. On bingchen, Kang Zanmei became Shang prefect; Zhang Jun, Left Guard senior general, was given acting Yongping and charge of Da'an. On wuwu, Wei Shenfu, former Jing prefect, became Right Guard senior general. On gengshen, Xie Yanzhang of Heyang became Kuangguo commissioner over Chen, Xu, and Cai; Wei Jian, Xuanhui deputy, was given acting Heyang.

On gengchen in the seventh month of autumn, Kang Zanmei of Shang was made restored Cloud-Banner General while keeping Shang. On xinmao, Yang Zhao, former Left Valiant Cavalry senior general, became Right Martial Guard senior general. On wuxu, Luo Zhoujing, former Kuangguo commissioner and honorary Left Vice Minister of Works, was made honorary Minister of Works, acting Palace Directorate commissioner, and imperial son-in-law.

On bingwu in the eighth month, Liu Junduo, Right Guangsheng commissioner, was appointed Guo prefect. On wushen, Li Cun, Wuning deputy commissioner, was given acting charge of Su. On xinhai, Du Jianhui of Jingyuan was promoted to honorary Grand Mentor and Grand Counselor. Jianhui was Qian Liu's man, remotely holding Jingyuan; this promotion answered Liu's petition. On yimao, Huang Gui of Cai was transferred to Jiang. On xinyou, Yin Hao of Jiang became Ganhua observation commissioner. On guihai, Zhang Zhengji, former Yongping deputy commissioner, was appointed Fang prefect. On yichou, Zhao Lu of Su was given acting Heyang; Liu Qufei, Left Valiant Cavalry general, became Ying prefect. On wuchen, Zhang Jun was confirmed Yongping commissioner while keeping charge of Da'an. That month the Prince of Jin halted at Yangliu Ford and camped at Majia; He Gui held the northern Xingtai village in Pu—they stared at each other for over a hundred days. The Prince of Jin rode out to scout; Xie Yanzhang of Xu sent ambushers against him. They ringed him again and again until relief came and the Prince of Jin barely escaped alive.

On dingchou in the ninth month, Wen Zhaotu of Jingsheng was promoted to honorary Grand Preceptor. On jiawu, Zhang Xiyi, Chongzheng deputy, was raised to Purple-Gold Grand Master and acting Secretariat vice-director. On yiwei, Zhang Changsun ended mourning restoration and received Grand Master of Splendid Happiness and honorary Grand Mentor.

On xinchou, first of the tenth month of winter, Yao, former Ganhua commissioner, became Left Dragon-Tiger commander and supreme horse-and-foot commander of the Western Capital. Dong Zhang, Luoyuan commissioner and acting Left Awesome Guard senior general, was made Right Dragon-Tiger commander. On jiyou, Qu Mei of Annan Jinghai was promoted to honorary Grand Guardian and Grand Counselor. On gengxu, Kang Zanmei of Shang was transferred to Cai. On renchen in the eleventh month, Zhu Shou of Huai was made restored Cloud-Banner General while keeping Huai.

On gengzi, first of the twelfth month, the Prince of Jin pressed the Xingtai stockade and camped ten li away. He Gui executed Xie Yanzhang, Meng Shencheng, Hou Wenyü, and others on a treason charge—Zhu Gui of the line camp had framed them. The Prince of Jin rejoiced: "Their commanders are divided—ruin is near." On dingwei, Zhu Gui was made honorary Grand Mentor and Kuangguo commissioner while keeping the line-camp chief of staff post. On guichou the court proclaimed: "Zhu Gui, line-camp chief and Kuangguo commissioner—while the foe remained and war was fierce we expected victory any day and watched our generals closely. Then Yanzhang, Shencheng, and Wenyü plotted treason; Zhu Gui's loyalty and secret planning captured them before they could aid the foe. Extraordinary honors signal his loyalty; a great frontier post rewards him. Let him be honorary Grand Mentor, Pinglu commissioner over the eastern coast, envoy to Silla and Bohai, deputy commander of line-camp horse and foot, and Marquis of Pei." On yisi, Princes of Hui and Shao, You Neng and You Hui, ended mourning restoration and were advanced to honorary Grand Mentor. Niu Zhiye, former Fang prefect, became Right Forest-Unicorn commander. On guihai, He Gui met the Jin at Huliu Slope and routed them. By evening the Jin had turned the battle and beaten him. The Jin had marched to strike the Eastern Capital and sent the army's old and weak back to Ye. On the twenty-second the Prince of Jin camped at Linpu; He Gui and Wang Yanzhang pursued from the Xingtai stockade. On the twenty-fourth at Huliu Slope the Prince of Jin attacked formed lines; Yanzhang's wing broke first and he fled to Puyang. Gui struck the Jin baggage west of the field; they stampeded and Zhou Dewei fell in the rout. Gui held a hill; the Prince of Jin attacked again and broke him. Next day the Jin took Puyang and the capital was placed under alert.

In the first month of Zhenming 5 the Jin fortified Desheng and fenced both banks of the river. On yisi in the second month, Wei Jian was given acting charge of Xu. On jimao in the third month, Yin Hao of Hua was made Hua commissioner and promoted to honorary Grand Guardian and Grand Counselor. On guiwei the court stripped rebel Yan commissioner Zhang Shoujin of every title he held. Liu Zhen was sent as Yan pacification commissioner to lead troops against him.

On renyin in the fourth month of summer, Zhang Jun was confirmed Yongping commissioner and honorary Grand Guardian while acting Da'an prefect. On gengxu, Qian Chuanjing of Zhenhai was remotely given Xuan's Ningguo commission and made Grand Counselor. That month He Gui assaulted south Desheng and blocked the ford with tower ships. The Jin severed the ships, crossed to relieve the south city, and He Gui withdrew.

On jisi in the fifth month, Kong Yin of Shannan East was made Grand Counselor. On dinghai, Gao Wanxing of Bohai was raised to honorary Grand Preceptor and Grand Counselor and named Baoda commissioner over Yan and Yan. That month Wang Yanzhang, Left Wing horse commander and Zheng defender, was made Xu Kuangguo commissioner while keeping the wing command. On renxu in the sixth month, Li Sui of the Heavenly Steed Court was given acting Deng.

In the seventh month of autumn the Prince of Jin left Weizhou for Taiyuan. On yiwei, first of the eighth month, He Gui of Hua died; the court mourned three days and posthumously made him Palace Attendant. That month Wang Zan, Kaifeng prefect, was named Northern Line pacification commissioner. Zan crossed from Liyang with Wang Yanzhang of Xu, camped at Yang village, and bridged the ford. On bingyin in the ninth month the court stripped Liu Yan of Guang and his Prince of Nanping title for impending usurpation. Qian Liu, marshal of all armies, was ordered to lead the punitive campaign.

In the tenth month of winter the Prince of Jin returned to Weizhou. That month Liu Zhen seized Yan, took Zhang Shoujin, and wiped out his clan. On dingchou in the eleventh month, Liu Zhen was made Yan commissioner and Grand Preceptor with honors for pacifying Yan. On xinmao, Wang Zan marched to Qi city and encountered the Jin. After a brief clash both sides drew off.

On wuxu in the twelfth month the Prince of Jin pressed the Henan stockade; Wang Zan held him off and took the Jin general Shi Jiacai. Soon Zan was beaten back to Yang village; the Jin seized Puyang.
