Emperor Shenzong—honored after death as one who embraced Heaven, united the Way, and united sagacious solemnity, sincere simplicity, brilliant culture, glorious martial accomplishment, secure benevolence, resting filial piety, and manifest brightness—was named Zhu Yijun and was the third son of Emperor Muzong. His mother was Consort Li, of the Gui rank. In Longqing two he was made crown prince at the age of six. Once when Muzong was racing his horse through the palace, the crown prince remonstrated: "Your Majesty is sovereign of the realm; galloping alone, might you not shy at the bit and come to harm? Muzong was pleased, dismounted, and praised him. Empress Chen, who was ill and lived apart, received the crown prince each morning when he came with Consort Li to inquire after her. At the sound of their footsteps the empress would brighten and rouse herself despite her illness. She would take up the classics and question him; he answered every point without hesitation, and Consort Li was delighted. From this the two palaces grew closer in harmony.

All ministers should purge past faults and together uphold the new order. If you sink back into old habits, betray the public for private gain, and offend the ancestors, I will not pardon you.
