Note: when two stars share the same longitude and latitude it is called yan (occultation); when their light meets it is fan (encroachment), also called ling. Planets move inside and outside the Yellow Path; fixed stars near the ecliptic all lie on paths they must cross—encroachments and transits all follow from this. Slow motion brings few transits; fast motion brings many; the counts can be foreknown—not like comets, broom-stars, and shooting stars, which are erratic. Heaven's bright warnings, then, should attach to those [irregular phenomena], not to these [planetary transits]. Dynastic astronomical treatises often link transits to events in the world—forced reading or lucky hits at best. Here we list in sequence planetary occultations and encroachments upon fixed stars. Set them beside historical events: fewer than one in ten match—later readers may judge for themselves. The moon's path resembles the planets', but it moves far faster; it crosses the Yellow Path and completes a circuit in twenty-seven days. Its occultations and encroachments upon fixed stars leave scarcely a day without one—yet could every such event foretell fortune or calamity? Those recorded in the Veritable Records are less than one percent, and even that is beyond writing; therefore they are omitted.
