When the Ming founder enfeoffed his sons as princes, he bestowed auspicious generational names on their descendants in advance, signifying that the house would endure for ages to come. By the mid-reign of Emperor Shenzong, the imperial clan had grown to only half the scale foreseen in the ancestral instructions—yet still to an uncountable multitude—and clan stipends ran short. Critics accordingly urged cuts to annual allotments, caps on palace consorts, and restrictions on petitions from collateral sons. Henceforth, when a collateral branch took over the main line, princes of the first rank were denied the former privilege of lateral succession; collateral heirs who took over a fief lost the old rule allowing a second split of commandery rank; explicit bans were also placed on titled marriages at improper times—policies that undercut the longstanding expectation that collateral branches would support one another. Under the Chongqi and Chongzhen emperors, military funds ran dry and the Minister of Revenue could scarcely look on in despair, let alone spare thought for the princely fiefs. Princes of the first rank might still scrape by, but commandery princes and the lower ranks down to assistant commandant were plunged into the deepest want. When rebellion broke out at last, they lacked the means to defend themselves and were cut down unarmed; altar and state were laid waste—a tragedy indeed. A look at earlier histories shows that in the Han dynasty the tables of kings and of kings' sons and marquises were kept apart rather than nested, making succession hard to follow. Under the Tang the imperial clan grew vast over many generations, yet because princes never left the inner palace and lines were not sorted into houses, their descendants went unrecorded altogether. The Song History listed every descendant of Taizu, Taizong, and Prince Wei Tingmei down to the fall of Lin'an, worthy and worthless alike, with no editorial selection. This table therefore records Ming princes of the first rank through commandery princes only, following the model of the Standard Histories and the Han tables of kings and of kings' sons and marquises. It also follows the Tang practice of sorting lines into houses, grouping each fief's commandery princes under their founding prince, as lesser lines attach to the main house. Those who never received a title are omitted entirely. (During the Hongwu era, seeing how vast his posterity had become, the founder feared duplicate names and assigned twenty characters to the heir apparent and to each princely house—one character per generation. At birth the Court of the Imperial Clan assigned a two-character name by generation: the first character followed the prescribed series, and the second used radicals cycling through the Five Phases—fire, earth, metal, water, wood—except for the Jingjiang princely line, which was exempt. The heir apparent's twenty-character series was: Yun, Wen, Zun, Zu, Xun, Qin, Wu, Da, Jun, Sheng, Shun, Dao, Yi, Feng, Ji, Shi, Liang, Shan, Yong, Sheng. The Qin house used: Shang, Zhi, Gong, Cheng, Bing, Wei, Huai, Jing, Yi, Cun, Fu, Si, Zi, Lian, Zhi, Kuang, Shi, Yong, Xin, Dun. The Jin house used: Ji, Mei, Zhong, Qi, Biao, Zhi, Xin, Shen, Min, Qiu, Shen, Xin, Xian, Jing, Mu, Shu, Xue, Ji, Qian, Xiu. The Yan house, which later became the imperial line, used: Gao, Zhan, Qi, Jian, You, Hou, Zai, Yi, Chang, You, Ci, He, Yi, Bo, Zhong, Jian, Jing, Di, Xian, You. The Zhou house used: You, Zi, Tong, An, Mu, Qin, Chao, Zai, Su, Gong, Shao, Lun, Fu, Hui, Run, Zhao, Ge, Guang, Deng, Yong. The Chu house used: Meng, Ji, Jun, Rong, Xian, Ying, Hua, Yun, Sheng, Rong, Hong, Cai, Sheng, Bo, Yan, Mao, Shi, Li, Quan, Gong. The Qi house used: Xian, Neng, Chang, Ke, Qing, Rui, Zhi, Shi, Kan, Zong, Yang, Xing, Qi, Yuan, Ya, Yin, Si, Fu, Hui, Tong. The Lu house used: Zhao, Tai, Yang, Dang, Jian, Guan, Yi, Shou, Yi, Hong, Zhen, Ju, Xi, Jian, Da, Kang, Zhuang, Yu, Ben, Ning. The Shu house used: Yue, You, Shen, Bin, Rang, Cheng, Xuan, Feng, Zhi, Ping, Mao, Jin, Shen, Zi, Yi, Duan, Ju, Wu, Mu, Qing. The Xiang house used: Jiu, Zhen, Kai, Fang, Yue, Yang, Wei, Jin, Li, Yi, Gang, Yi, Xun, Chao, Zhuo, Quan, Heng, Su, Zi, Chi. The Dai house used: Xun, Shi, Cheng, Cong, Jun, Chong, Ting, Ding, Ding, Yi, Chuan, Yi, Lian, Xiu, Yu, Bing, Yao, Zhuang, Hong, Ji. The Su house used: Zhan, Lu, Gong, Zhen, Bi, Jin, Shen, Shi, Lie, Zhong, Xi, Hui, Ji, Dang, Yun, Kai, Jian, Chu, Heng, Long. The Liao house used: Gui, Hao, En, Chong, Zhi, Xian, Shu, Yan, Zun, Ru, Yun, Reng, Qi, Bao, He, Cao, Han, Li, Long, Yu. The Qing house used: Zhi, Sui, Zhi, Tai, Zi, Ni, Shen, Shu, Zhuo, Qi, Shi, Wan, Yin, Ju, Kan, Zhi, Juan, Fa, Xu, Pi. The Ning house used: Pan, Dian, Jin, Chen, Gong, Duo, Mou, Tong, Yi, Zhong, Zong, Tian, Zhi, Shu, Kuo, Zuo, Zhe, Xiang, Qin, Zhong. The Min house used: Hui, Yin, Ying, Yan, Yu, Ding, Gan, Qi, Yin, Yong, Chong, Li, Yuan, Zi, Fang, Kuan, Rong, Xi, Ben, Cong. The Gu house used: Fu, Zhi, Xi, Xiong, Chang, Cong, Xing, Chan, Fu, Chang, Du, Xie, Xun, Yi, Yu, Kuo, Ji, Yu, Zhen, Xiang. The Han house used: Chong, Fan, Zheng, Xie, Xu, Rong, Mo, Lang, Jing, Kui, Dan, Shao, Yu, Hao, Zao, Ling, Xu, Jia, Fan, Wei. The Shen house used: Ji, You, Quan, Xun, Yun, Tian, Cheng, Xiao, Hui, Huang, Shi, Yuan, Yin, Xi, Wei, Gui, Bi, Che, Cheng, Ang. The An house used: Fei, Xu, Bin, Ting, Shang, Ning, Tan, Jun, Zhi, Xiang, Hui, Yan, Zhuan, Ji, Ju, Zhen, Mi, Kuo, Cheng, Gang. The Ying house used: Wei, Wen, Can, Wang, Shi, Zhen, Hui, Za, Gao, Kui, Qi, Lin, Yu, Ji, Zhao, Kui, Ying, Ye, Xuan, Ji. The Yi house used: Yong, Mian, Di, Xu, Dian, Bao, Ke, Cai, Feng, Chen, Ying, Chou, Ban, Zhou, Xuan, Kun, Yu, Guan, Quan, Jin. The Jingjiang princely line used: Zan, Zuo, Xiang, Gui, Yue, Jing, Bang, Ren, Lü, Heng, Ruo, Yi, Chun, Yi, Xing, Yuan, De, Xi, Fang, Ming. In the Ming imperial line, only under the Xizong and Chongzhen emperors did reign names reach the character "You" in the generational series. Most other princely houses likewise never used more than ten of their twenty characters. Sons of a prince of the first rank were routinely enfeoffed as commandery princes. When a collateral branch took over a princely fief, only the eldest son could inherit as prince of the first rank; other sons kept the ranks appropriate to their original line and could not improperly claim commandery titles. Commandery princes had no generational name series; brothers and their sons could not petition to succeed the title, and to do so counted as fraudulent enfeoffment. These were all regulations of the seventh year of Wanli (1579).) The founding emperor had twenty-six sons. Aside from Crown Prince Yiwen, the prince Nan received no enfeoffment. Chengzu was made Prince of Yan in Hongwu year 3 and later became the imperial line, so he is not listed among the feudatory successions. Twenty-three received princely titles: Prince Min of Qin (Shuang), Prince Gong of Jin (Gang), Prince Ding of Zhou (Su), Prince Zhao of Chu (Zhen), Prince of Qi (Fu), Prince of Tan (Zi), Prince of Zhao (Qi), Prince Huang of Lu (Tan), Prince Xian of Shu (Chun), Prince Xian of Xiang (Bai), Prince Jian of Dai (Gui), Prince Zhuang of Su (Zhen), Prince Jian of Liao (Zhi), Prince Jing of Qing, Prince Xian of Ning (Quan), Prince Zhuang of Min (Bian), Prince of Gu, Prince Xian of Han (Song), Prince Jian of Shen (Mo), Prince Hui of An (Ying), Prince Ding of Tang, Prince Jing of Ying (Dong), and Prince Li of Yi. The Jingjiang prince, enfeoffed as a commandery prince in his capacity as principal grandson of the Nanchang line, is recorded afterward.
