初，湛娶褚秀之女，被遣，褚淵爲衞軍，重斆爲人，先通音意，引爲長史。 Earlier, Jiang Zhan had married a daughter of Chu Xiu; she was later sent away; when Chu Yuan became General of the Guard, he admired Xiao's character, opened relations with him in advance, and appointed him Chief Clerk.
