初北境亂離，亡一女，及貴，遠加推訪，終不得，疑其為人婢賤。 At first, when the northern frontier was in turmoil, he lost a daughter; when he rose high he searched for her far and wide but never found her, and suspected she had become someone's slave.

及為司徒，奴婢訴良者，不研虛實，率皆免之，願免千人，冀得其女。 When he became minister over the masses, slaves and maidservants claiming to be free persons — without investigating truth or falsehood — were in every case freed; he hoped to free a thousand persons and thereby recover his daughter.
