廢帝入立，遷吏部尚書、門下侍郎，監修國史。 When the Deposed Emperor entered and was enthroned, Xu was promoted to Minister of Personnel and Chancellery Vice Director, and supervised the compilation of the dynastic history.

初，廢帝入，問三司使王玫：「帑廩之數幾何？」 When the Deposed Emperor first entered and took the throne, he asked Wang Mei, commissioner of the Three Departments: "How large are the treasury and granary holdings?"

及責以賞軍而無十一，廢帝大怒，罷玫，命昫兼判三司。 When funds were needed to reward the troops and scarcely a tenth of the sum was available, Emperor Fei flew into a rage, removed Wang from office, and ordered Liu Xu to serve concurrently as acting commissioner of the Three Departments.

相府史吏惡此兩人剛直，因共揚言，其事聞，廢帝並罷之，以昫為右僕射。 The chancellery clerks loathed both men's inflexibility and spread word of their quarrel. When Emperor Fei heard of it, he dismissed them both and made Liu Xu right vice director of the Imperial Secretariat.
