德宗嗣位，言事者稱轉運可罷多矣。 When Emperor Dezong succeeded, many memorialists urged abolishing the transport commission.

炎因對敭流涕奏言：「賴祖宗福祐，先皇與陛下不為賊臣所間。 Yang seized an audience to declare tearfully: "Thanks to our ancestors' blessing, the late emperor and Your Majesty were not estranged by treacherous ministers.

崔祐甫奏言：「此事曖昧，陛下以廓然大赦，不當究尋虛語。」 Cui Youfu replied: "This matter is vague; Your Majesty has proclaimed a broad amnesty and should not pursue idle rumor."

準乃奏晏與硃泚書祈救解，言多怨望，炎又證成其事，上以為然。 Yu Zhun reported that Yan had written to the rebel Zhu Ci pleading for rescue, his language seething with grievance; Yang Yan bolstered the accusation, and the emperor believed it.

貞元五年，上悟，方錄晏子執經，授太常博士； In 789, once the emperor realized his error, he took Yan's son Zhijing into service and appointed him erudite of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices;
