明宗之為統帥，嘗與契丹戰於上谷，明宗臨陣馬逸，為敵所迫，令溫乃以所乘馬授明宗，而自力戰，飛矢連發，敵兵為之稍卻。 When Mingzong was supreme commander he once fought the Khitans at Shanggu. Mingzong's horse bolted under him on the field and the enemy closed in. Lingwen gave him his own mount and fought on foot, loosing arrow after arrow until the enemy drew back.

及明宗即位，歷遷神武彰聖都校。 When Mingzong took the throne, Lingwen rose to colonel of the Shenwu and Zhangsheng armies.
