大行在殯，竟陵王子良在殿內，太孫未立，眾論喧疑。 While the late emperor lay in state, Prince of Jingling Ziliang was in the hall and the heir was not yet named — rumor swirled.

曄眾中言曰：「若立長則應在我，立嫡則應在太孫。」 Ye said before the assembly: "If the elder line is chosen it should be me; if the direct heir, it should be the crown prince."

郁林即立，甚見憑賴。 Emperor Yulin was enthroned and Ye was greatly relied upon.

鏘雍容得物情，為鬱林王所依信。 Qiang was easy in manner and won popular affection; Emperor Yulin relied on and trusted him.

鬱林心疑高宗，諸王問訊，獨留鏘謂之曰：「公聞鸞於法身何如？」 Emperor Yulin suspected Emperor Ming; when the princes came to pay respects he alone detained Qiang and said: "What have you heard of Luan's attitude toward the Dharma Body?"

臣等年皆尚少，朝廷之干，唯鸞一人，願陛下無以為慮。」 We are all still young; Luan alone is the pillar of the court. I hope Your Majesty will not worry about him."

鬱林退謂徐龍駒曰：「我欲與公共計取鸞，公既不同，我不能獨辦，且復小聽。」 Emperor Yulin withdrew and told Xu Longju: "I want to join with you in a plot against Luan; since you disagree, I cannot act alone — for now let us wait a little longer."

及鬱林廢，鏘竟不知。 When Emperor Yulin was deposed, Qiang knew nothing of it.
