弱冠以驍果應募，始隸於莊宗帳前，與大梁兵經百餘戰，以功遷馬直軍使。 When he came of age he joined the elite shock troops and was first assigned to Emperor Zhuangzong's personal guard. He fought the armies of Later Liang in more than a hundred battles and, for his achievements, was promoted to commander of the imperial horse guard.
