晉出帝納玉姊為後，玉以後戚知制誥，拜中書舍人。 The Deposed Emperor of Jin took Yu's elder sister as empress. As a maternal relative of the empress, Yu was put in charge of drafting edicts and appointed drafting secretary in the Secretariat.

是時，出帝童昏，馮皇后用事，軍國大務，一決於玉。 At that time the Deposed Emperor was young and inexperienced. Empress Feng held sway, and all major affairs of state and army were decided by Yu alone.
