凝舉進士及第時第五，後知舉，選範質為第五。 When Ning himself had passed the jinshi he ranked fifth; later, as exam supervisor, he placed Fan Zhi fifth.

後質位至宰相，封魯國公，官至太子太傅，皆與凝同，當時以為榮焉。 Later Fan Zhi rose to chancellor, was enfeoffed as Duke of Lu, and reached the post of grand preceptor of the heir apparent—all mirroring Ning's own career, which contemporaries took as an honor to them both.
