乾祐初，授鎮州副使，過鄴城，高行周接之甚歡，鵬因言及晉朝傾亡之事，少帝任用失人，藩輔之臣，惟務積財富家，不以國家為意，以至宗社泯滅，非獨帝王之咎也。 Early in Qianyou he was made deputy commissioner of Zhenzhou. Passing through Yecheng he was warmly received by Gao Xingzhou, and Peng spoke of the fall of Jin: the Young Emperor had chosen the wrong men; frontier ministers cared only to enrich their families and not the state, until the dynasty was destroyed—a failure not of the emperor alone.

行周性寬和，不以鵬言為過。 Xingzhou was broad-minded and did not take Peng's remarks amiss.

鵬既退，行周左右謂行周曰：「張副使之言，蓋譏令公也。」 After Peng left, Xingzhou's attendants said to him, "Deputy Commissioner Zhang's words were surely aimed at you, sir."

行周因發怒，遂奏鵬怨國訛言，故朝廷降詔就誅於常山，時乾祐元年七月也。 Xingzhou then grew angry and memorialized that Peng had slandered the state out of resentment. The court issued an edict for his execution at Changshan, in the seventh month of Qianyou 1.
