顯祖嘗召見，問以治方，語及政刑寬猛，帝意深文峻法，稚廉固以為非，帝意不悅。 Xianzu once summoned him and asked about methods of governance. When the conversation turned to lenient versus severe policy and punishment, the emperor favored harsh statutory interpretation and severe laws. Zhilian firmly objected, and the emperor was displeased.

顯祖嘗因酒酣，握惇鬚髯稱美，遂以刀截之，唯留一握。 Gao Yang once, when drunk with wine, grasped Dun's beard and praised it, then took a knife and cut it off, leaving only one handful.
