漢高祖典禁兵，補章孔目官，從之太原。 When Han’s High Ancestor took the palace guard, Zhang became his clerk and followed him to Taiyuan.

高祖即位，拜三司使、檢校太尉。 At enthronement Zhang became Three Departments commissioner and Acting Grand Commandant.

高祖崩，隱帝即位，加太尉、同中書門下平章事。 The High Ancestor died; the Hidden Emperor made Zhang Grand Commandant and Associate Grand Councilor.

少為梁邵王牙將，與漢高祖有舊，高祖鎮太原，以為左都押衙。 Youth found him a guard to Liang’s Prince of Shao; he knew Han’s High Ancestor from old days. At Taiyuan the High Ancestor made him left chief adjutant.

銖為人慘酷好殺戮，高祖以為勇斷類己，特信用之。 Zhu was cruel and loved blood. The High Ancestor saw his own ruthlessness in him and trusted him deeply.

高祖即位，拜永興軍節度使，徙鎮平盧，加檢校太師、同平章事，又加侍中。 At enthronement Zhu governed Yongxing, then Pinglu; he rose to Acting Grand Preceptor, Associate Grand Councilor, and Palace Attendant.
