超母妻既先在長安，為姚興所拘，責超稱籓，求太樂諸伎，若不可，使送吳口千人。 Yao Xing detained Murong Chao's mother and wife, demanding that Chao declare himself a vassal and surrender the Grand Music performers; failing that, he was to send a thousand people from Wu.

為當專以孝敬為母屈也？」 Or is it solely bending in filial respect for the mother?”

範承間逞說，姚興大悅，賜范千金，許以超母妻還之。 Han Fan pressed his case; Yao Xing relented, paid him, and promised the hostages back.

慕容凝自梁父奔于姚興，言於興曰：「燕王稱籓，本非推德，權為母屈耳。 Murong Ning fled from Liangfu to Yao Xing and said to Xing: “The Yan king’s declaration of vassalage was not from yielding virtue—it was a temporary bend for his mother.

古之帝王尚興師征質，豈可虛還其母乎！ Ancient emperors still raised armies to demand hostages—how can you hollowly return his mother!

母若一還，必不復臣也。 If the mother returns once, he will surely not again be a subject.

興善之，於是還超母妻， Yao Xing relented and freed Murong Chao’s family.

義熙三年，追尊其父為穆皇帝，立其母段氏為皇太后，妻呼延氏為皇后。 In the third year of Yixi, Murong Chao canonized his father as Emperor Mu, made Lady Duan dowager, Lady Huyan empress.
