族子華每稱有王佐才，士多慕向。 His kinsman Li Hua often declared that he had the makings of a chief minister, and scholars flocked to admire him.

始，居汲共城山下，華固請舉進士，俄擢高第。 At first he lived at the foot of Gongcheng Mountain in Ji; Li Hua pressed him to sit for the jinshi examination, and he soon placed at the head of the list.
