其父仁恭，初隨父晟客於范陽，晟以軍吏補新興鎮將，事節度使李可舉。 His father Liu Rengong had first accompanied his own father Liu Sheng as a dependent in Fanyang. Sheng was promoted from the clerical ranks to commandant of Xinxing Town and served under Military Governor Li Keju.
