不书刘仁赡降，事见死节传。盖仁赡实不降，故书周自克之尔。「克」者，难取之名也，寿难取，则见仁赡之节著，不书「死之」者，仁赡自以病死，以其至死守节，故列之死节传。 Liu Renzan’s surrender is not recorded; see the Biographies of Those Who Died for Principle. Renzan never truly surrendered, so the annals say Zhou “took” the city—the word for a hard-won capture. Shouzhou’s difficulty shows Renzan’s steadfastness. The text does not say he “died in battle” because he died of illness; having held firm to the end, he belongs in the martyrs’ biographies.
