少有膽氣，本州節度使劉守光用為親信，出為平塞軍使。 As a youth he was bold and spirited. Liu Shouguang, military governor of the region, took him as a confidant and later sent him out as commander of the Pingsai garrison.

守光敗，歸於太原，唐莊宗收為列校。 When Shouguang fell he made his way to Taiyuan, where Zhuangzong of Tang enrolled him among the officer corps.
