同治二年，逆回馬榮詐降，入城戕總督潘鐸，肆殺掠，琮遇害，贈右都御史。 In the second year of Tongzhi the rebel Hui Ma Rong feigned surrender, entered the city and killed Governor-General Pan Duo, then slaughtered and plundered freely. Cong was killed and was posthumously granted the rank of censor-in-chief of the right.
