嗣隨宋慶、馬玉昆克肅州及關外諸城，積勳至都司。 He later followed Song Qing and Ma Yukun in taking Suzhou and other cities beyond the pass and rose to colonel on accumulated merit.

以事與玉昆左，棄冠服走博克達山為黃冠。 After a falling-out with Ma Yukun he abandoned his office, fled to Mount Bogda, and became a Daoist priest.

光緒十五年，玉昆提督畿輔，鳩集舊部，獨偉視寶勝，招之出。 In 1889 Ma Yukun became governor-general of Zhili, reassembled his old command, singled out Baosheng for special regard, and called him back to service.

敦促備至，寶勝愾然曰：「玉昆知我者，義不忍卻！」 Ma Yukun pressed him insistently. Baosheng said angrily, "Yukun knows me well—I cannot in honor refuse!"
