莊宗遣元行欽討之，行欽攻魏不克，乃遣明宗代行欽。 Zhuangzong sent Yuan Xingqin against him. Xingqin attacked Wei and failed, so Mingzong was sent to replace him.

明宗至鄴，軍變，因入城與在禮合。 Mingzong reached Ye. The army mutinied, and he entered the city to join Zaili.

明宗兵反嚮京師，在禮留于魏。 Mingzong’s troops turned back on the capital. Zaili stayed at Wei.

明宗即位，拜在禮義成軍節度使，在禮不受命，遂拜鄴都留守、興唐尹。 When Mingzong took the throne, Zaili was made military governor of Yicheng. He refused and was made Ye capital regent and Xingtang prefect instead.

莊宗酒酣，指彥威等舉酒屬明宗曰：「此皆前日之敵，今侍吾飲，乃卿功也。」 Zhuangzong, drunk, pointed at Yanwei and the rest and raised his cup to Mingzong: “Yesterday’s enemies—today they pour my wine. That is your doing.”

明年，徙鎮武寧，從明宗擊契丹，明宗愛其為人，甚親厚之。 Next year he held Wuning and marched with Mingzong against the Khitan. Mingzong loved the man and kept him near.
