未幾，粵匪竄河北，直隸總督訥爾經額出省防剿，命桂良駐保定為後路聲援，兼防西路要隘。 Soon the rebels pushed into Hebei. While Governor-General Na'erjing'e marched out to fight them, Gui Liang was ordered to hold Baoding as a rear base and guard the western passes.

是年秋，賊由山西犯畿南，訥爾經額師潰於臨洺關，隆平、柏鄉相繼陷。 That autumn the rebels entered the capital region from Shanxi. Na'erjing'e's army was routed at Linming Pass, and Longping and Baixiang fell one after another.

訥爾經額褫職逮治，授桂良直隸總督，詔責偕都統勝保速籌防剿。 Na'erjing'e was dismissed and arrested; Gui Liang was made governor-general of Zhili and ordered, together with Banner Commander Shengbao, to organize defense and pursuit without delay.
