太元末，琅邪王出居外第，妙選師傅，徵拜尚書，領琅邪王師。 Late in Taiyuan, when the Prince of Langye moved to an outside residence, He Cheng was chosen as his tutor, recalled as a director in the Department of State Affairs, and named preceptor to the prince.

安帝即位，遷尚書左僕射，典選、王師如故。 Under Emperor An he became Left Vice Director, kept charge of appointments, and remained the prince’s tutor.
