因蚤喪父，事繼母孝，有父、祖喪未葬，投書先友翰林待制楊恕，憐而助之，始克襄事。 Liu Yin lost his father while still young and served his stepmother with filial devotion. His father and grandfather lay unburied; he wrote to his father's old friend Yang Shu, a Hanlin Academician Awaiting Orders, who took pity on him and helped with the expenses, so that he could at last perform the burials.

未幾，以母疾辭歸。 Before long he resigned and returned home because his mother had fallen ill.

明年，丁內艱。 The following year he entered mourning for his mother.

後以老母中風，請還家省視，不幸彌留，竟遭憂制，遂不復出，初豈有意於不仕邪？ Later, when my aged mother suffered a stroke, I asked to return home to care for her. Unfortunately her illness lingered, and in the end she died; I entered mourning and did not come forth again. Was that truly an intention never to serve?
