會王凝自尚書郎出為絳刺史，圖以文謁之，大為凝所賞歎，由是知名。 When Wang Ning left the Secretariat to become prefect of Jiang, Tu presented his writings and won Ning's warm admiration, and from that gained his name.

未幾，凝入知制誥，遷中書舍人、知貢舉。 Soon Ning entered the edict office, became Secretariat Drafter, and took charge of the civil examinations.

頃之，凝出為宣州觀察使，辟圖為從事。 Before long Ning became surveillance commissioner of Xuanzhou and recruited Tu as an aide.

與王凝外昆弟也。 He was a maternal cousin of Wang Ning.

凝大中初先顯，而彥昭未仕，嘗見凝，凝倨不冠帶，嫚言曰：「不若從明經舉。」 Ning had risen to prominence early in the Dazhong era while Yanhao had yet to take office. On one occasion Yanhao called on him. Ning received him arrogantly without cap or sash and spoke contemptuously, saying, "You would do better to try the Mingjing examination."

至是，凝為兵部侍郎。 By this time Ning had become Vice Minister of War.

而凝竟免。 In the end, however, Ning was spared dismissal after all.

圖，咸通末擢進士，禮部侍郎王凝特所獎待，俄而凝坐法貶商州，圖感知己，往從之。 Tu passed the jinshi at the end of Xiantong; Vice Director of Rites Wang Ning especially prized him; soon Ning was demoted to Shangzhou for a legal offense and Tu, moved by gratitude, went to follow him.

凝起拜宣歙觀察使，乃辟置幕府。 When Ning was raised and appointed observation commissioner of Xuan and She, he recruited Tu to his staff.

召為殿中侍御史，不忍去凝府，臺劾，左遷光祿寺主簿，分司東都。 He was summoned as attending censor but could not bear to leave Ning's headquarters; the censorate impeached him and he was demoted to master of records in the Court of Imperial Entertainments, serving at the eastern capital.
