天子既好宛馬，聞之甘心，使壯士車令等待千金及金馬以請宛王貳師城善馬。 The emperor, already horse-mad, sent Che Ling with a fortune in gold and a golden horse to buy the Ershi studs from the king of Ferghana.

宛大恐，走入中城，相與謀曰：「漢所為攻宛，以王毋寡。」 In great fear they fled into the inner citadel and plotted together, saying, "Han is attacking Dayuan because of King Wugua."

宛貴人謀曰：「王毋寡匿善馬，殺漢使。 The grandees said, "Wugua hid the horses and murdered the envoys.

計以為來誅首惡者毋寡，毋寡頭已至，如此不許，則堅守，而康居候漢兵罷來救宛，破漢軍必矣。 Han had marched to punish Wugua; with that head delivered, to refuse the offer meant a prolonged siege while Kangju waited for Han exhaustion—and Han would surely be broken.
