開元中，詔舉遺逸，以鈐謀對策甲科，歷京兆府參軍，尹蕭炅薦之，遷會昌丞。 During the Kaiyuan reign an edict called up neglected men of talent; Yuan passed the policy examination on military strategy at the top grade, served as an aide in the capital prefecture, won recommendation from Prefect Xiao Jiong, and was promoted to assistant magistrate of Huichang.
