景宗上 Jingzong, Part One

景宗孝成康靖皇帝，諱賢，字賢寧，小字明扆。 The Emperor Jingzong, posthumous title Xiaocheng Kangjing, personal name Xian, courtesy name Xianning, childhood name Mingyi.

察割之亂，帝甫四歲。 During the Chaige Rebellion the Emperor was only four years old.

帝一日與韓匡嗣語及時事，耶律賢適止之。 One day the Emperor spoke with Han Kuangsi about current affairs, and Yelü Xianshi cut him off.

帝悟，不復言。 The Emperor took the hint and said no more.

己巳，穆宗遇弒，帝率飛龍使女裏、侍中蕭思溫、南院樞密使高勛率甲騎千人馳赴。 On jisi day Muzong was assassinated; the Emperor led Flying Dragon Commissioner Nüli, Palace Attendant Xiao Siwen, and Southern Chancellery Commissioner Gao Xun at the head of a thousand armored horsemen in haste to the scene.

群臣勸進，遂即皇帝位於柩前。 The ministers urged him to ascend, and he took the throne before the coffin.

百官上尊號曰天贊皇帝，大赦，改元保寧。 The officials submitted the honorific title Emperor Tianzan; a grand amnesty was proclaimed and the era name was changed to Baoning.

丙申，射柳祈雨。 On bingshen day the Emperor shot the willow branch to pray for rain.

有司請以帝生日為天清節，從之。 The officials asked that the Emperor's birthday be declared the Tianqing Festival, and the request was granted.

冬十月，東幸瑽潭。 That winter, in the tenth month, the Emperor traveled east to Congtan.

二年春正月丁未，如潢河。 In the second year, on dingwei day in the first spring month, the Emperor went to the Huang River.

五月癸丑，西幸。 In the fifth month, on guichou day, the Emperor traveled west.

六月，還上京。 In the sixth month the Emperor returned to the Supreme Capital.

二月癸酉，東幸。 In the second month, on guiyou day, the Emperor traveled east.

己丑，以青牛白馬祭天地。 On jichou day the Emperor sacrificed a green ox and white horse to heaven and earth.

己卯，祠木葉山，行再生禮。 On jimao day the Emperor sacrificed to Mount Muye and performed the rebirth rite.

丙戌，至自東幸。 On bingxu day the Emperor returned from the eastern tour.

六月丙子，漢遣使問起居，自是繼月而至。 In the sixth month, on bingzi day, Han sent envoys to inquire after the Emperor's health, and such missions thereafter arrived every month.

八月甲戌，如秋山。 In the eighth month, on jiaxu day, the Emperor went to Autumn Mountain.

辛卯，祭皇兄吼墓，追冊為皇太子，謚莊聖。 On xinmao day the Emperor sacrificed at the tomb of his elder brother Hou, who was posthumously enfeoffed as crown prince with the posthumous title Zhuangsheng.

壬子，幸歸化州。 On renzi day the Emperor visited Guihua Prefecture.

甲寅，如南京。 On jiayin day the Emperor went to the Southern Capital.

保寧元年，樞密使蕭思溫薦斜軫有經國才，上曰：「朕知之，第佚蕩，豈可羈屈？」 In Baoning 1, Privy Council Commissioner Xiao Siwen recommended Xiezhen as possessing talent to govern the state. The emperor said, "I know him, but he is free-spirited and unruly—how can he be confined to office?"

乃召問以時政，占對剴切，帝器重之。 He was then summoned and questioned on current affairs; his replies were sharp and apt, and the emperor came to esteem him highly.

妻以皇后之侄，命節制西南面諸軍，仍援河東。 The emperor married him to the empress's niece, appointed him to command the southwestern armies, and ordered him to reinforce Hedong.

景宗時，多任以軍事。 Under Emperor Jingzong he was often entrusted with military command.
