咸豐十年，粵、捻合擾皖北，毓蘭以從九品偕兄毓芬集團練助剿鳳、潁間，從解壽州圍，擢縣丞。
In the tenth year of Xianfeng, when Taiping and Nian rebels jointly ravaged northern Anhui, Yulan, a subordinate ninth-grade officer, joined his elder brother Yufen in raising militia to fight between Fengyang and Yingzhou, helped lift the siege of Shouzhou, and was promoted to assistant magistrate.
調守溧陽，降賊屯城中，勢岌岌，突有金壇賊至，毓蘭與兄毓芬議乘賊初至破之，設伏以誘。
