臨海王昭秀爲荊州，以昌爲西中郎長史、輔國將軍、南郡太守，行荊州事。 When Xiao Zhaoxiu, Prince of Linhai, held Jing Province, Chang was made Chief Clerk of the Western Central Commandant, General Who Assists the State, and Administrator of Nanjun, with charge of Jing Province affairs.

昌曰：「僕受朝廷意寄，翼輔外蕃，何容以殿下付君一介之使。 Chang said, "I have received the court's trust to assist the frontier princes—how could I deliver Your Highness into the hands of a single envoy?

若朝廷必須殿下還，當更聽後旨。」 If the court truly requires Your Highness to return to the capital, we must await further imperial orders."

昭秀以此得還京師。 Thanks to this, Zhaoxiu was able to return safely to the capital.
