帝命周德威率兵三萬攻之，營於城東。 The Emperor sent Zhou Dewei with thirty thousand to besiege Xin and camped east of the walls.

俄而文進引契丹大至，德威拔營而歸，因為契丹追躡，師徒多喪。 Wenjin soon brought a great Khitan host; Dewei broke camp, was chased home, and lost many men.

德威間道馳使以聞，帝憂形於色，召諸將會議。 Dewei sent word by a hidden path; the Emperor's face showed worry and he called his generals to council.
