先是授兆琛為貴州布政使，偕總兵周洪印率師往，積歲無功。 Earlier Zhao Chen had been appointed Guizhou provincial treasurer and marched there with Brigadier Zhou Hongyin, but after years they had achieved nothing.

巡撫李瀚章、劉昆先後劾罷兆琛、洪印，元度亦鐫級，薦起寶田招集舊部萬人入貴州，總統東路諸軍。 Governors Li Hanzhang and Liu Kun in turn impeached and dismissed Zhao Chen and Hongyin; Yuandu was demoted as well. Baotian was recalled, raised ten thousand veterans, entered Guizhou, and took command of the eastern armies.
