祖珽執政，將廢趙彥深，引孝言為助。 When Zu Ting took power and plotted to remove Zhao Yanshen, he enlisted Xiaoyan as an ally.

又托韓長鸞，共構祖珽之短。 He also leaned on Han Changluan to join in fabricating charges against Zu Ting.

及祖出後，孝言除尚書右僕射，仍掌選舉，恣情用捨，請謁大行。 After Zu was driven out, Xiaoyan was made right vice director of the Masters of Writing, still controlling appointments — disposing of offices as he pleased while petitions and favors poured in.
