1
Since antiquity, whenever emperors have risen to power, they have invariably enfeoffed many sons and younger kinsmen to strengthen the royal house — honoring the root line and magnifying the state's power. Judging by their clan registers and jade genealogical rolls, major lines and minor branches are kept in proper order without confusion — a matter of real care. Yet even at the height of the Tang, after Emperor Xuanzong the princes never left their quarters and the histories had already lost track of their generations — to say nothing of later dynasties? The Yuan imperial clan genealogy was kept in golden caskets and stone vaults with the utmost secrecy, so that the outer court could not know it. The historical offices can give only the broad outline, and even when one consults the documents one may not recover every detail. To set down what is known and leave blank what is not is likewise the historians' way. Here is composed the Imperial Clan Genealogy Table.

The Taizong Emperor had seven sons: the eldest was the Dingzong Emperor; second, Kuoduan, Crown Prince; third, Kuochu, Crown Prince; fourth, Prince Harqachar; fifth, Great Prince Heshi; sixth, Great Prince Heden; seventh, Great Prince Mieli. Note: According to Shizong's annals, Taizong considered his son Yue Liang incompetent and therefore did not establish him as successor. On examining the imperial-lineage section of the Comprehensive Institutions of Governance and the Annual Stipend Register, I find neither Yue Liang's name nor his proper sequence; I therefore dare not enter him in the lineage table and record him here instead, until someone better informed may clarify. Emperor Chengzong had one son, Crown Prince Deshou, who died young and left no descendants. Emperor Wuzong had two sons—the elder became Emperor Mingzong, the younger Emperor Wenzong. Emperor Renzong had two sons; the elder became Emperor Yingzong; the younger was Prince of An, Uduz Buqa, who died young and left no descendants. Emperor Yingzong left no sons. Emperor Taiding had four sons—Crown Prince Arigbab, Jin Prince Badma Erjen, Crown Prince Xiaoxue, and Crown Prince Yundan Zangbu—all of whom died young without issue. Emperor Mingzong had two sons—the elder became Emperor Shun, the younger Emperor Ningzong. Emperor Wenzong had three sons. The eldest, Crown Prince Aratnadara, died young and left no descendants; the second was Crown Prince Yantughus and the third Crown Prince Taipingne; both likewise died young without issue. Emperor Ningzong died in youth and left no sons. Emperor Shun had three sons. The eldest was Crown Prince Ayushiridara; the other two died in youth. The Record of the Ten Ancestors' Genealogy states that when the founding ancestor Boduanchid took in the households of the Tümenilqur people, he once received a pregnant woman named Cha'ijilai. He took her in, and the posthumous son she bore was named after his mother, Cha'ijilai. From that time they formed a separate line, also known as the Tatars. Because he was not a son of the founding ancestor by blood, he is not listed in the main genealogy table but is recorded here as an appendix.
