On jiayin the prince ascended the throne and the realm was pardoned. The empress dowager proclaimed: "Our house has held the mandate nearly two hundred years; sage ancestors have kept the altars secure. Gaozu led with civil virtue; Shizong followed with martial worth. The late emperor ruled with breadth and kindness, warm, clear, respectful, and obedient. We hoped Heaven would bless us with many heirs. When Lady Pan conceived in the Pepper Palace we hoped for an heir, but no bear appeared and only the serpent was shown. Because the realm was still unsettled we falsely named a prince. We meant to steady the realm and bind all eyes to the throne. Who thought that in one morning bow and sword would be beyond recall! The late emperor's great-grandson Zhao, heir of the late Prince of Lintao, is of Gaozu's line and bears a surpassing countenance. The late emperor cherished him as a son; he is fit for the great treasure. That day he ascended the throne. Let it be proclaimed far and near. On yimao the infant ruler ascended the throne. The judgment says: Xuanwu inherited his father's sage enterprise; the realm looked to his transforming rule, he governed without strain, and the frontier submitted. Yet he was lenient below, slow and indecisive, and the Taihe age passed. Among the Han he would rank with Yuan, Cheng, An, and Shun. After Xuanwu came the Yuans and the Chengs; Xiaoming ruled as a child; the empress dowager, a woman, held sole power, used unfit men, and rewards and punishments went awry. Strife rose within the realm and disaster reached the capital. In the end his reign was brief; this was the beginning of ruin.
