Treatise 19: Commanderies and Principalities, Part I
2
The Geography Treatise in the Book of Han exhaustively traces every commandery and county in the empire, notes remarkable mountains and rivers, and explains how regional customs arose. This chapter records only post-restoration changes among commanderies and counties, plus battle-related placenames where the Spring and Autumn and the three standard histories agree—hence the title Commanderies and States. Any county listed in the earlier Geography but omitted here was folded into another unit or struck from the rolls under Emperor Guangwu. Entries that had no Western Han predecessor were added in subsequent reigns. The county named first in each list is the commandery seat.
