1
From Fuxi gazing up and down, the Yellow Emperor taking the sun and reckoning the cycles, Chongli ordering Heaven and Earth, Yao marking sun, moon, and stars, Shun aligning the seven regulators, and King Wu of Zhou questioning Jizi and laying out the Great Plan to harmonize the five calendars—the art of reading Heaven was whole. The Book of Changes says, "Heaven hangs forth images; fortune and disaster show themselves; the sage takes them as models." So Confucius drew on the Lu annals to write the Spring and Autumn: sun, stars, wind, rain, frost, hail, and thunder he logged only when they changed, never the ordinary—to lay bare Heaven's Way and weigh human affairs. Since Qin and Han, rulers have cared little for such matters; yin and yang slip their measure, and heaven's signs tangle and cross—no dynasty has been free of it. Jin lasted one hundred nineteen years and saw forty-two solar eclipses; stars, wind, rain, frost, hail, and thunder changed beyond count. Of Jin's nine emperors none matched Shizong—yet even his twenty-nine years brought eleven solar eclipses and four or five halos with rainbows piercing the sun. Yet only thrice in all Jin did auspicious clouds ring the sun—and all three fell in Shizong's reign.
2
After Xi and He, Han had the Sima clan, Tang the Yuan and Li families—each generation held the celestial office, and their lore runs deep. The six directions are one cosmos; the methods of reckoning do not truly diverge. Jin and Song faced each other; each kept its own calendar, the methods differed, and even the astronomers chosen ranged from skilled to crude. Now, by decree we compile the History of Jin; in the astronomy treatise we follow each dynasty's own records, but take the Spring and Autumn as the sole standard.
