On bingzi Feng Yu, a bureau director in the Ministry of Revenue and edict drafter, was made acting Right Vice Director of the Department of State Affairs and regimental commissioner of Ying Prefecture. Soon after, Suizhou prefect Li Yimin led troops without authorization to the city gate; an ambush was sent against him, and seeing the cause lost, he fled south with five brothers and their families." An edict declared: "Li Yimin secretly allied with criminals and openly pursued rebellion. Even among kin he still brought slaughter; within the emperor's grace such conduct cannot be borne. Send him to Xia for execution." On bingshen the emperor visited Great Year Manor, then the home of Palace Guards commissioner Jing Yanguang. On the first day yimao of the twelfth month, Left Leading Army Guard general Cai Xingyu was sent to garrison troops at Yun, and twenty-six inner-hall attendants were dispatched from Heyin to Haikou to patrol by district, because Qing commissioner Yang Guangyuan was plotting rebellion. On gengxu former Left Director of Correct Deportment Lady Wu of Qi and twenty-one women of lower rank were all made ladies of commandery or state, as were guest-receiving ladies of the empress dowager's and empress's palaces. Retired Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent Liang Wenju died and was posthumously made Grand Tutor of the Heir Apparent. On guichou an edict summoned commissioners Fu Yanqing of Heyang, Gao Xingzhou of Song, Wang Lingwen of Bei, Li Chenfu of Tong, Liang Hanzhang of Chen, Li E of Bo, and Xue Huairang of Huai to court and dispatched envoys to inspect the prefectures, because the Khitan had invaded. Supervising Secretary Bian Guangfan and former Deng prefect Guo Yanwei were sent to the Khitan; at Heng the enemy had already crossed the border, so they could not proceed and stayed in the official hostel for months before returning without delivering their message. (《History of Liao》: In the second month of Tianfu 8, on yimao, Jin sent envoys presenting the late emperor's relics. On xinyou Jin envoys asked to reside at Bian; the request was granted. In the third month, on dingwei, the Jin ruler reached Bian and sent envoys to give thanks. In the fifth month, on jihai, envoys were sent to Jin with birthday gifts. In the sixth month, on xinyou, Jin sent envoys with gold tribute. On the first day dingwei of the eighth month of autumn, Jin again sent gold tribute. Hua and the Shaan prefecture reported 12,300 fleeing households. On yichou, at the La sacrifice, the emperor did not go abroad. On dingmao an edict had Palace Secretariat commissioner Liu Jixun gather commissioners and army commanders for archery at Du Wei's garden. On the first day jiaxu of the first month of spring in Kaiyun 1, battle clouds that night veiled the leader star of the Northern Dipper. On yihai Cang, Heng, Bei, and Ye sent urgent word that Khitan vanguard Zhao Yanshou and Zhao Yanzhao were leading 50,000 horsemen in invasion toward Ganling—summoned by Yang Guangyuan of Qing. On jimao the Khitan captured Bei; acting prefect Wu Luan was killed. On gengchen Song commissioner Gao Xingzhou was made overall commander of the northern campaign; Heyang commissioner Fu Yanqing was left-wing horse array marshal; Right Divine Martial commander Huangfu Yu was right-wing horse marshal; Shaan commissioner Wang Zhou was left-wing foot marshal; and Left Feathered Forest commander Pan Huan was right-wing foot marshal. Taiyuan reported that the Khitan had entered Yanmen Pass and besieged Xin and Dai. Heng, Cang, and Xing reported that the Khitan had arrived in force. That year hundreds of thousands starved to death empire-wide, and an edict ordered local officials to bury them. On renwu an edict set the thirteenth of the month for the emperor's northern expedition and made former Bin commissioner Li Zhou acting garrison commander of the Eastern Capital. On yiyou the emperor departed the Eastern Capital. On dinghai enemy cavalry reached Liyang. Palace Guards cavalry commander Li Shouzhen was made vanguard chief adjutant. Hebei was in dire straits, and envoys begging rescue came one after another from the prefectures. On wuzi the emperor reached Chan. Bei commissioner Wang Lingwen was transferred to Deng because his brother Lingchong had come from the Khitan and reported that their whole clan was trapped at Ganling. On xinmao Yedu garrison commander Zhang Congen sent men down the wall by night with a secret report: the Khitan ruler had pitched camp at Yuancheng with 30,000–40,000 armored horsemen, made Zhao Yanshou Weibo commissioner and Prince of Wei, and Yanshou daily led cavalry to skirmish at the walls before withdrawing. On jiawu Northern Capital garrison commander Liu Zhiyuan was made pacification commissioner for the Youzhou campaign, with Heng commissioner Du Wei as deputy and Ding commissioner Ma Quanjie as chief adjutant; staff and generals were left to the commissioner's discretion. On yiwei a white rainbow appeared paired in heavy fog; diviners said, "This is a sign of maritime excess—battle will surely follow below." An edict ordered all public and private horses empire-wide levied for the cavalry. On bingshen the Khitan attacked Liyang. Right Martial Guard senior general Zhang Yanzhe and others were sent with 3,000 elite cavalry to resist them. On jihai translation officer Meng Shouzhong was sent with a letter to the Khitan ruler seeking to restore the old alliance. When Shouzhong returned from the enemy camp, the Khitan ruler replied, "What is already settled cannot be changed." On xinchou Taiyuan reported fighting the Khitan at Xiugu, beheading 3,000, capturing 500 alive and 17 enemy generals; the enemy scattered into Crow Cry Valley and pursuit was under way.

On the first day jiachen of the second month, Shi Yun was sent to hold Majiakou, He Jian Yangliu town, Bai Zairong Majia ford, and An Yanwei Heyang. Yun reported that Bo prefect Zhou Ru had surrendered his city to the Khitan and secretly agreed with Yang Guangyuan to bring the Khitan across the river at Majia ford. Guo Jin was then at Wenyang and sent Left Martial Guard general Cai Xingyu with several hundred horsemen to their aid. Ambushers burst from the reeds; after several clashes his men fled, and Xingyu was taken with grave wounds, unable to ride, and was carried in a basket to the enemy command tent. Li Shouzhen and others were sent by land and water downstream to relieve Wenyang. On bingwu vanguard commander Shi Gongba met the Khitan north of Qicheng and was encircled. Gao Xingzhou and Fu Yanqing were resting under the trees when news of the enemy arrived; startled, they rallied the army and advanced. The Khitan were overwhelming; trapped in rings of encirclement, they sent a rider to Jing Yanguang begging for reinforcements. Yanguang held back, waiting for orders from the emperor. Xingzhou's men roared and charged with blazing eyes; casualties mounted until the emperor led the palace guard in person and broke the encirclement. (History of Song, Biography of Fu Yanqing: Khitan cavalry numbering in the tens of thousands had Gao Xingzhou trapped at Iron Mound; no general would face them until Yanqing alone led a few hundred riders in a charge that drove the Liao off and freed Xingzhou. History of Song, Biography of Gao Huai'de: At Qicheng they were ringed again and again with no relief in sight; Huai'de fought shooting in every direction, broke through the press, and carried his father out.))〉 On Qicheng's old terrace they held a feast for the three generals, bitterly reproached Yanguang for failing to send aid, and wept together. On wushen the Khitan threw up earthworks on the east bank of Majia ford and posted cavalry outside to block the imperial army. Li Shouzhen engaged them and routed their force. Enemy riders broke and ran; thousands drowned in the river, and the Khitan camp was taken. Earlier, tens of thousands on the west bank had drummed and waved banners to encourage their comrades; seeing the east-bank force collapse, they wailed and withdrew. Eight hundred horses were seized; seventy-eight enemy officers and five hundred soldiers were captured alive, brought to the imperial camp, and executed. On xinhai Xizhou commissioner Li Yiyin united forty thousand Tangut and Han troops, reached Linzhou, crossed the river, and struck into Khitan lands to tie down the enemy. On renzi Yiyin was appointed Southwest Pacification Commissioner against the Khitan. Yi prefect An Shen'yue reported fighting the Khitan at Beiping; the enemy fell back to Qigou Pass, and he cut their bridges before returning. On guichou survivors from Bozhou straggled in from behind enemy lines. After Zhou Ru's surrender the enemy marched his men toward the Khitan camp; one night a soldier broke his bonds, freed his comrades, seized enemy weapons, and killed more than two hundred guards before fleeing south; with no boats at the river they swam across, and only sixty-seven survived the drowning. That day the sun was ringed in yellow-white light, and two white rainbows ran alongside it. On jiwei Cang reported three thousand raiders escorting captives and loot toward Khitan lands by way of Changlu; light cavalry ambushed them, killing or capturing over a thousand, and the enemy fled leaving people and baggage behind. On gengshen Chief Minister Feng Dao and others again petitioned to restore court music; the emperor refused. Since leaving mourning the emperor had kept soft female musicians in the palace; since taking the field in person he daily called frontier tribal officers to play sanxian and huqin with Qiang flutes, drums, and alternating song and dance for his amusement. He often told his attendants, "This is not music." So when Feng Dao and others asked to restore proper court music, the emperor's reply was refusal. On renxu Yang Guangyuan besieged Jizhou; Prefect Li Qiong sallied with local troops and drove him from camp. Ji reported defeating the enemy below the walls and seeing a coffin borne past; captives said, "At Qicheng the chief commander Golden-Head King took an arrow and died—this is his coffin." On guihai former Deng commissioner He Jian was made southeast theater commander of horse and foot and marched to Wenyang. On jiazi Shu troops attacked Jie Prefecture.

On the first day guiyou of the third month the Khitan ruler brought more than a hundred thousand men to fight. The Khitan had pretended to quit Yuancheng camp for ten days, concealing crack cavalry in old Dunqiu to ambush the imperial army. (Zizhi Tongjian: Yedu garrison commander Zhang Congen kept reporting the enemy gone and urging pursuit, but the advance halted in torrential rain.))〉 After days in ambush men and horses were starving; Zhao Yanshou urged, "Jin forces are pinned on the river, afraid of our edge—strike straight for the city, attack from four sides, seize the bridges, and the realm is ours." The Khitan ruler approved the plan. That day Gao Xingzhou's vanguard stood south of Qicheng while Zhao Yanshou and Zhao Yanzhao led tens of thousands of riders against the imperial west flank and the Khitan ruler himself struck from the east; the battle seesawed. By late afternoon the Khitan ruler committed his center; the emperor took personal command of the palace guard in reserve while forces east and west crossed the river in a crescent formation, banners bright and ranks tight. The Khitan ruler looked on and told his attendants, "Yang Guangyuan claimed half the Jin army had starved—yet see how strong they look today!" Enemy cavalry wheeled and charged while the imperial line held firm; a volley of ten thousand crossbows darkened the sky and the Khitan line began to give ground. A defector then told the Khitan ruler, "The southern line is weak on the east; the river forts are shaky—attack there." The Khitan sent elite cavalry against the east; the imperial army broke and fled with enemy riders in pursuit. More than a thousand grooms were building waterworks on the dike; banner tips showed above the dam, and the pursuers mistook them for a fresh ambush and stopped. Fighting resumed and the imperial line fell back again until Li Shouchao led several hundred horsemen in a close-quarters charge that pushed the enemy back. Men and horses lay dead beyond count; broken shafts and spent arrowheads carpeted the ground inches deep. At nightfall the enemy beat gongs and pulled back, marching thirty li before making camp. Guardian Sage commander Xie Ba (Editorial note: text appears missing before the name Xie Ba.))〉 He defected to the enemy and his entire clan was wiped out. An Chonghuai, second-in-command of the Guardian Sage Guard; commander Wu Hanqi; inspector He Yanchao and others panicked in battle and dropped their weapons—all were executed. On yihai a Khitan tent guard stole his lord's horse and defected, reporting, "The Khitan have passed wooden orders to withdraw north." (Khitan State Chronicle: Jing Yanguang feared a trap and shut the walls, refusing to pursue. The Liao emperor marched north, burning and looting everything in his path until little remained.))〉 Qi reported Qingzhou rebel troops raiding Mingshui town. On renwu Minister of Rites Lu Zhan died and was posthumously made Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent. On jiashen the Khitan royal train had passed Beizhou, leaving Zhao Yanzhao to hold the city. (History of Liao: Third month, renwu—Zhao Yanzhao was left at Beizhou and captives were moved inland.))〉 On xinmao Dingzhou's Ma Quanjie took Taizhou, capturing two thousand soldiers plus livestock and arms in proportion. On guisi Northern Capital garrison commander Liu Zhiyuan, also Grand Councilor, was enfeoffed King of Taiyuan; other titles unchanged. That day an edict levied militia empire-wide: one man from every seven households, supported by six others, armed at their own expense, under the designation Wuding. Vice Director of Imperial Sacrifices Wang Xu was executed publicly. Xu, whose family was in Qingzhou, had been writing to Yang Guangyuan; his concubine's brother, angry at being denied aid, accused him of plotting with Guangyuan and leaking court secrets; Xu was arrested and beheaded.

On dingwei Congen was made Grand Councilor and sent back to Ye. On jiyou an edict fixed the eighth of the month for the emperor's return; Gao Xingzhou and Wang Zhou were left to garrison Chan-Yuan with local forces under their discretion. On jiayin the emperor returned from Chuanzhou and granted a limited amnesty in the capital for all but capital crimes. On dingsi Ji Prefecture was elevated to a defense command. Tong and Hua reported cannibalism among the people. On jiwei Right Martial Guard senior general Zhang Yanzhe was appointed commander of the Right Divine Martial Guard. On xinyou Yun commissioner and Palace Guard commander Jing Yanguang was made Western Capital garrison commander; Song commissioner Gao Xingzhou was made Palace Guard commander; Palace Guard deputy Li Shouzhen, also Yicheng commissioner, was transferred to Yanzhou while keeping his army command. That day thirty-six officials were sent to circuits and prefectures to levy money and cloth for the army in rotation. On guihai Western Capital garrison commander An Yanwei became Jinchang commissioner; Jinchang commissioner Zhao Ying became Hua commissioner; Left Dragon Martial commander Huangfu Yu became Hua Prefecture commissioner. That day the emperor feasted Jing Yanguang in the palace and said, "You helped establish the dynasty; posting you to guard Yi and Luo is no mere reward for merit." He then gave Yanguang his own robe and jeweled belt. On bingyin Long reported fifty-six thousand dead from famine.

On the first day renshen of the fifth month Taiyuan's Liu Zhiyuan asked to defer his royal investiture, citing an unsettled frontier and crushing military costs. On wuyin Palace Guard deputy Li Shouzhen was dispatched with twenty thousand foot and horse to crush Yang Guangyuan at Qingzhou. On dinghai Yedu garrison commander Zhang Congen was named overall Beizhou camp commander, (Zizhi Tongjian: Zhang Congen argued, "Zhao Yanzhao holds Beizhou, but his troops are homesick after long service abroad—we should attack at once." An edict appointed Congen Beizhou camp commander.))〉 Hua commissioner Huangfu Yu became deputy camp commander; Left Divine Martial commander Pan Huan took the cavalry; Right Divine Martial commander Zhang Yanzhe took the infantry. On xinmao Zhang Congen reported Zhao Yanzhao burning and looting Beizhou before abandoning the city. (Zizhi Tongjian: Yanzhao withdrew to Ying and Mo and fortified himself behind the water.))〉 Li Shouzhen was made Qingzhou theater commander with Heyang commissioner Fu Yanqing as his deputy. On wuxu Deng commissioner He Jian was made Yongqing Army commissioner at Beizhou. That month Ze and Lu reported more than five thousand famine deaths.

On dingwei Palace Secretary Sang Weihan became Grand Councilor and Commissioner of Military Affairs. Acting Kaifeng mayor Li Zhou died; court was suspended and he was posthumously made Grand Preceptor. On xinhai Xing commissioner An Shuqian was made Jin commissioner and appointed Grand Councilor; Jin commissioner Song Yanyun was transferred to Shaan; Personnel bureau director Li Gu was made direct academician of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On bingchen the Yellow River broke through at Hua, inundating Cao, Dan, Pu, Yun, and neighboring prefectures; the flood wrapped around Mount Liang and merged with the Wen and Ji. (History of Song, Biography of Yang Zhaojian: The breach affected several commanderies; mass corvée was levied under the local commander, and the breach was eventually closed. Emperor Shao of Jin was pleased and ordered a monument erected to commemorate it. Zhaojian remonstrated: "Your Majesty, a stone monument to merit is less fitting than an edict of mourning and repentance; literary praise is less fitting than proclaiming a confession of your own errors." His words were forceful; Emperor Shao admired them and dropped the plan.))〉 On wuwu Fu Prefecture was raised to regimental commissioner rank. On gengshen Xiang Prefecture presented a white magpie. On jiazi the office of Hanlin academician was restored. On yichou the chief ministers submitted three memorials asking to resume court music; the emperor approved.
