(Miscellaneous Records from Wenchang: Separate Preface records Confucius's birthplace and his disciples' studies. New Meaning uses the King of Yue as interlocutor to explain the commentary. Imperial Spirit deals only with prolonging life, avoiding disaster, and talismanic writings—it is a Daoist text. Yin Diagram discusses only solar halos and comets—hardly a remarkable book either.)〉

On the first day xinchou in spring of Xiande 7, civil and military officials offered New Year congratulations. Zhen and Ding sent urgent reports that Khitan forces had invaded and Hedong rebels had marched east through Tumen Pass to join them. The court ordered the present sovereign to lead a northern campaign. On guimao he left the capital and lodged that night at Chenqiao Post. Before dawn the army mutinied; troops shouted "Long live the emperor!", donned armor and drew swords, and pressed the present sovereign onto the throne; they helped him mount and crowded him south. That day an edict read: "Heaven bred the people and set rulers over them; Yao and Shun yielded the realm in the public interest, and the Three Kings changed the mandate when the time came—the principle is the same. I am but a young and unworthy ruler; misfortune has struck my house, the people's hearts have turned away, and the mandate has found its new home. I summon you, Zhao, military commissioner of the Guide Army and director of the Palace Front, (Note: the original text here omitted two characters.)〉 You bear the stature of a supreme sage and a divinely martial mind; you aided our founding emperor and won Heaven's approval; you served Shizong to the end and secured the succession; your campaigns east and west won the realm—your achievements are great. Heaven, earth, and the spirits accept the offerings of the virtuous; the people's songs and lawsuits turn to supreme benevolence; answer Heaven and follow the people, yield as Yao did to Shun, cast off this heavy burden, and let me be your guest. Reverently! Reverently accept Heaven's mandate. The present sovereign then went to the Hall of Exalted Origin to receive the mandate; the officials offered congratulations and withdrew. An edict made the Zhou emperor Prince of Zheng to maintain Zhou rites; calendar, regalia, and colors stayed as before, and the empress dowager was honored as Zhou empress dowager. (Extended Comprehensive Mirror: In Jianlong 3 the Zhou Prince of Zheng was sent to live at Fangzhou.)〉 In spring of Kaibao 6 he died at Fangling. The present sovereign was shaken with grief; he donned mourning in the side hall, officials offered condolences, and soon a palace envoy was sent to oversee the funeral. (Extended Comprehensive Mirror: On yimao in the third month of Kaibao 6, Fangzhou reported the Zhou Prince of Zheng's death; the emperor wore plain dress, mourned, and suspended court for ten days.)〉 That October he was buried beside Emperor Shizong at Qingling. The court ordered his posthumous title set as Emperor Gong and his tomb named Shunling. (Extended Comprehensive Mirror: In Jiayou 4 of Renzong, the court ordered the Chai genealogy searched and the eldest collateral-line descendant chosen to maintain Zhou sacrifices each year.)〉

The historiographer writes: In the cycle of the four seasons, when cold departs, summer comes; and in the Five Phases, when metal wanes, fire rises. Thus Yao and Shun's abdications and the Han and Wei transfers of the mandate all followed this pattern and answered to the people's will. All the more so for Emperor Gong, still in tender youth, when the music of state changed key: he heard where the people's songs pointed, knew the mandate had found its holder, and yielded the throne—was that not wise? That his final title was Gong was only fitting.
