The eulogy says, "As crown prince, Renzong lost favor with Chengzu." He stood in peril yet was restored to safety—the great-grandson heir had much to do with it. After he took the throne, officials fulfilled their duties, government found its balance, discipline was clear, granaries overflowed, and the lanes knew contentment. No year could bring disaster. From the founding of the Ming to this point sixty years had passed; the people's spirits eased, and signs of good order rose like steam. When powerful fiefs suddenly rose, they were swiftly cut down; border dust was swept away and crafty foes were awed—the Emperor's heroic bearing and keen strategy perhaps matched the martial prowess of his ancestors.
