殿 [3]
In the eighth year, in the first month of spring, on yimao, the Emperor fell ill. On jiwei the crown prince presided over affairs at Wenhua Hall. On jisi his illness turned grave; in his testament he abolished the burial of consorts with the dead. On gengwu he died, aged thirty-eight. 45
輿
The appraisal says: Yingzong took up the legacy of Renzong and Xuanzong; the realm within the seas grew rich, and court and countryside knew peace. Grand ministers such as the Three Yangs, Hu Ying, and Zhang Fu were hereditary servants of several reigns, entrusted at the late emperor's death to guide the state, and public order had not yet slackened. Yet Wang Zhen's monopoly of power opened the breach, until the imperial carriage was driven into exile. After his restoration he still dwelt on these things without end—how deep his infatuation ran! Altogether he held the throne twenty-four years, with no grave harmful policies. In raising posthumous honors for Empress Gongrang, freeing the Deposed Heir from his bonds, and ending consort burial sacrifice, he left deeds of great virtue that later ages may take as models.
46
"Shi Biao advanced to marquis": here dated to the first month; this book, juan 107, Chronological Table of Meritorious Officials, and the Yingzong Shilu, juan 302, place it in the fourth month on jisi.
