Appraisal: From Shizong's reign onward, the institutions of the Ming daily declined, and by Shenzong's final years ruin was complete. Even a firm, clear-sighted, and martial sovereign could scarcely have revived them. Compounded by this emperor's feebleness and timidity, with consorts and eunuchs seizing power, rewards poured out without measure and punishments ran wild, loyal men met cruel ends, and the people turned away in their hearts—even if one did not seek ruin, how could it have been avoided?
