便殿 使
After the Hongwu Emperor secured the Yuan capital, his generals gathered maps and archives and conveyed them to Nanjing. He then ordered a search for lost books throughout the realm, appointed a vice director of the Secretariat Directorate to oversee them, and shortly afterward reassigned the duty to Hanlin keepers of the archives. In the fourth year of the Yongle reign, the emperor withdrew to the informal hall to read histories and inquired how many books were held in the Wenyuan Pavilion. Xie Jin answered that the collection was still full of gaps and omissions. The emperor said, "Even humble households with a little spare means still want to build up libraries—how much more ought the throne to do so? He then ordered Zheng Ci, the Minister of Rites, to send agents to seek out and buy books, paying whatever sellers asked without bargaining over price. Once Beijing had been made the capital, the court ordered the compiler Chen Xun to draw from the Wenyuan holdings: for every title held in one to one hundred copies, he was to choose a single exemplar. In this way he filled one hundred cabinets and had them shipped to Beijing. The Xuande Emperor once visited the Wenyuan Pavilion in person, opened the classics and histories himself, and debated them with Yang Shiqi and other grand secretaries, for which he rewarded them with poems of his own composition. At that time the imperial library held roughly twenty thousand titles and nearly a million scrolls, with printed editions and manuscript copies in a proportion of about thirteen to seventeen. During the Zhengtong reign Yang Shiqi and his colleagues reported: "The Wenyuan collection includes our forebears' imperial writings and the full range of classical, historical, philosophical, and literary works from every age. Formerly shelved in the north corridor of the Left Shun Gate, these volumes have now been moved to the Wenyuan and Eastern Pavilions. We have inventoried them one by one and drawn up a catalogue; we ask that the imperial seal be affixed so they may be preserved in perpetuity. The throne replied, "Let it be so." In the tenth year of the Zhengde reign Grand Secretary Liang Chu and his colleagues asked that incomplete or damaged volumes in the Grand Secretariat and Eastern Pavilion collections be surveyed, and that Li Jixian and the other supervising secretaries who had long managed the holdings be directed to restore them in turn. Before this, the palace library's holdings were almost entirely fine Song and Yuan survivals, bound with their folded covers turned outward on every side so that worms and rats could not reach the pages. By the disorders of the rebel armies, Song block-prints and Yuan editions alike had been reduced to tattered remnants. Ming imperial poetry and prose were cut on palace blocks; works that scholar-officials compiled by edict and proclamations posted at the Gate of Audience were likewise voluminous and finely wrought, and in their day were distributed throughout the empire. Beyond the court corpus stood the writings of celebrated statesmen and the private voices of poets and scholars; the best of these were grave, refined, and broadly elegant—works plainly worthy of transmission. Even the odd and heterogeneous pieces that appeared among them suffice to trace shifts in literary taste, map the currents of classical learning, and gather precedent great and small. In flower and fruit together they yield nothing to earlier ages—can one deny that the literary age had reached its height!
2
The fourfold bibliographic division originated with Xun Xu and was followed from the Jin and Song dynasties onward. Earlier dynastic histories listed writings both ancient and modern on the assumption that all were held in the archives of their own day. During the Wanli reign the compiler Jiao Hong worked on the dynastic history and compiled a Treatise on Classics and Writings that was praised as exhaustive. Yet even Hong could not survey the full holdings of the imperial libraries; on what basis, then, could he record the accumulated writings of earlier ages? He could only patch together hearsay in hope of continuing the Sui catalogue, while spurious works were misfiled and errors multiplied. The present treatise therefore limits itself to works produced over the dynasty's two hundred and seventy years, sets them in rough order, and compiles them into a single catalogue. Where scroll counts cannot be verified or authenticity remains doubtful, entries are omitted rather than filled in speculatively.

Compiled by imperial order in the Hongwu reign: Selected Passages from the Shujing Commentary, 6 scrolls. The Hongwu Emperor, finding Cai Shen's Shujing Commentary partly correct and partly mistaken, ordered Liu Sanwu and others to revise it. He also gathered commentaries from various schools to supplement what was lacking. When the book was completed it was issued in print, yet in the end it was rarely circulated. During the Yongle reign, the Great Compendium was compiled, following Cai's Commentary throughout for the convenience of examination candidates; beyond this there was no further critical inquiry.
