The histories are divided into ten categories: first, standard histories (annals are included in this category). second, miscellaneous histories; third, historical excerpts; fourth, institutional precedents; fifth, official posts; sixth, ritual regulations; seventh, penal law; eighth, biographies; ninth, geography; and tenth, genealogical registers.

Ming Veritable Records of Taizu, 257 juan; in the first year of the Jianwen reign, compiled by Dong Lun and others. In the first year of the Yongle reign, Xie Jin and others undertook a new revision. In the ninth year, Hu Guang and others revised it once more. It runs from the xinmao year of Zhiyuan (1351) through the wuyin year of the thirty-first year of Hongwu (1398)—forty-eight years in all from beginning to end. During the Wanli reign, at the request of the censor Yang Tianmin, the records of the first through fourth years of the Jianwen Emperor were appended at the end.

Calendar, 100 juan: during the Hongwu reign, Zhan Tong and others compiled it, recording in full Taizu's campaigns of conquest and pacification and the details of ritual, music, and statecraft. Sacred Instructions, 15 juan. After the Calendar was finished, Zhan Tong and others petitioned to classify and recompile the emperor's governance into a separate work of five juan. Later the court historians expanded it by category until it reached fifteen juan.

In the fourth year of Jiajing, Grand Secretary Fei Hong said: "The Xian Emperor's fine words and exemplary conduct must already exist in completed form at his former residence; they should be brought to the Historiography Institute for compilation. The court assented.

Veritable Records of Shizong, 566 juan, and Sacred Instructions, 24 juan; in the Longqing reign Xu Jie and others began the compilation, but it was not completed. In the fifth year of Wanli, Zhang Juzheng and others continued the work and brought it to completion.

Not until the first year of Chongzhen was Ye Xianggao's original version presented to the throne and deposited in the Imperial History Vault.
