Since ancient times, whenever an emperor accepted Heaven's mandate, he mobilized the collective strength of his followers to win the empire. Once the empire was secure, rulers weighed merit and rewarded service, ennobling their supporters. Men who had seized their chance beside the throne, risen from the ranks, and received fiefs and insignia—even their descendants—were treated with extraordinary generosity. From the Tang and Song dynasties onward, the practice diverged somewhat from earlier custom. Fang Xuanling and Qiao Songzhou, wielding great influence, were the first to decline perpetual enfeoffments—so the lines of Ying and Wei sank to the level of commoners. Under the Song, ennoblement chiefly bestowed hollow titles: forebears and sons alike received nominal territorial designations, but without formal hereditary succession—nothing like the old custom of passing a house from generation to generation. When the Ming founder established his dynasty, he boldly revived ancient practice. Veteran commanders and chief advisors alike received titles in life and hereditary fiefs after death; patent estates were granted to more than a hundred families. By the dynasty's late years, factional prosecutions swept the court. Massive purges left scarcely thirty or forty percent of these houses standing. Yet reading the inscriptions on the iron merit tablet—the warnings inscribed there—shows that the sworn oaths of old were never meant to end this way. Their lofty peril and overflowing fortune were largely of their own making. When Emperor Chenghua discounted the labors of the "Pacifying Difficulties" faction and Emperor Yingzong heaped honors on the "Recovering the Throne" party—men who had aided enthronement but ranked as secondary founders—how can they be named in the same breath as the dynastic founders? Midway through Emperor Jiajing's reign, the court reopened the old archives and revived the ritual of restoring extinct noble lines. Descendants of the E, Cao, Wei, and Xin houses were reinstated as full marquises, their genealogies continued, and the realm responded with widespread approval. Though the Song, Ying, Han, and Mu lines were eventually wiped out, the other men whose loyalty was recorded in the ledgers of merit passed down ermine ranks and court insignia through generation after generation. They kept their stipends, commanded the palace guard and capital armies, garrisoned the secondary capital, oversaw grain transport, and held the empire's weightiest provincial posts, rising to the highest ranks. Their clans enjoyed ceremonial honors unknown to the Han practice of stripping titles for insufficient tribute. In many respects they outdid the hereditary nobility of the Western Han. I now compile a table of meritorious ministers from the succession dates recorded in the Veritable Records, to accompany the annals and biographies. Where records conflict, are incomplete, or cannot be verified, I leave the entry blank, in keeping with the historian's right to omit what cannot be known.
