先是，集庆尝有警，阿鲁灰以湖广平章政事将苗军来援，事平，其军镇扬州。 Previously Jiqing had been threatened; Aruhui, Pingzhang of Huguang, had led Miao troops to its relief, and after the crisis his army was garrisoned at Yangzhou.

而阿鲁灰御军无纪律，苗蛮素犷悍，日事杀虏，莫能治。 But Aruhui commanded his troops without discipline; the Miao soldiers were by nature fierce and brutal, killing and plundering daily, and no one could control them.

俄而苗军杀阿鲁灰以叛，而集庆之援遂绝。 Before long the Miao troops killed Aruhui in rebellion, and aid to Jiqing was cut off.
