時勑侍中西河王、秘書監常景選儒學十人緝撰五禮，繪與太原王乂同掌軍禮。 At the time an edict had the attendant-in-ordinary Prince of Xihe and Secretary Director Chang Jing select ten Confucian scholars to compile the Five Rites; Hui and Wang Yi of Taiyuan together took charge of military rites.

嘗從常景借書百卷，十許日便返。 Once he borrowed a hundred scrolls from Chang Jing and returned them in about ten days.

景疑其不能讀，每卷策問，應答無遺。 Jing doubted he could have read them and quizzed him scroll by scroll; he answered without a gap.

景嘆曰：「應奉五行俱下，禰衡一覽便記，今復見之於裴生矣。」 Jing sighed, "Ying Feng took in the Five Classics at a stroke and Mi Heng remembered at one glance—today the same gift appears in Master Pei."

卒後，殯於家園，友人常景、李渾、王元景、盧元明、魏季景、李騫等十許人於墓傍置酒設祭，哀哭涕泣，一飲一酹曰：「裴中書魂而有靈，知吾曹也。」 After his death he was buried in the family estate; some ten friends, including Chang Jing, Li Hun, Wang Yuanjing, Lu Yuanming, Wei Jijing, and Li Qian, set out wine and offerings beside the tomb, weeping as they drank and poured libations, saying, "Vice Director Pei, if your spirit hears us, know that we are here."

未幾，受詔與祕書監常景典儀注事。 Before long he received an edict to oversee ritual regulations together with Chang Jing, Director of the Palace Library.

作侯山祠堂碑文，常景見而善之，故詣淵謝之。 He wrote an inscription for the Hou Mountain shrine; Chang Jing read it, admired it, and went to Yuan to express his thanks on Zisheng's behalf.

景曰：「頃見溫生。」 Jing said, "I have just seen Master Wen."

淵怪問之，景曰：「溫生是大才士。」 Yuan asked in surprise; Jing said, "Master Wen is a man of great literary talent."
